Post rotting at base

Post rotting at base

1 of the three main deck support posts supporting my deck is rotting just above the ground. The other 2 may be starting to rot just below the footing. The house is about ten years old, only we've had a kiddie pool on the deck and I think the splash h2o from that may accept contributed to early on rot of pressure treated wood (6x6). The supports are sitting on top of physical a foot downward I think. I got two estimates to fix information technology

1) Jack deck upwardly and replace 6x6's and put rubber sleeve on them.

2) Summary: Concrete three 6x6 back up posts nether deck, Physical above ground and a 10 " diameter around existing 6x6 posts.

Detail (for #ii)
Jack up the deck and brace information technology.
Dig downward xx to 24 inches into the basis.
And sleeve that hole approx 6 inches to a higher place the basis so there is no chance information technology will ever rot again.
The forest that is at that place volition exist into the concrete six inches or more and volition exist protected above and or below the ground .

Is it ok to concrete in supports that are rotted? Will the rot travel higher up the board once they are concreted?

Is there a ameliorate solution?

Thank you!

The starting time option is more of quick and muddy brusque term solution. This is because posts tin can frequently go along to rot once they get going. And then this notion of putting in a new mail and wrapping it in a sleeve is a adept solution if you programme on resting the post on the footing and burial the mail in the ground.

In fact, this technique is used by a lot of pole barn builders. There is a young man in Pennsylvania who specializes in this exact technique and you lot should read his commodity. The solution he came up with is called the Post Protector. I think this would be a very good solution if y'all become with the first type of solution proposed past your builder. They have a 30" sleeve simply you could cut that down to the length you lot need. You tin can check it out at PostProtector.com.

The second option seems more than similar a long term solution except that setting wood posts into concrete is always 2nd all-time to resting the mail service on a collision on top of the concrete pier above footing. Physical is porous so water volition always be able to wick upwards into it and so into the postal service. I would consider removing the mail service and separating information technology from the concrete with some kind of standoff base. You lot might be able to avoid replacing the post entirely and the work that entails if the rot is localized and you can easily cut off the rotted portion. Y'all would then accept to fill the void with a filler cake of the same dimension and you lot would have to scab 6x6's forth the side of the post to stabilize the block with the existing mail service.

So there is work to be washed in either example.
